idiot songs: sometimes you just need one.
“…nothing more than a futilitarian douchebag.”
Futilitarian- Holding or based on the view that human endeavor is futile
That’s a mighty large character assassination based on no real information, my friend. The only things you know about me are what I post into tumblr, and the music I’ve released.
I wrote this ‘song’ called “Company Of Men” that appeared on Envy On The Coast’s Lowcountry record. Originally, I wrote it as an idea that was only half done, to see if everyone liked it enough to include it in the body of work that would be considered for the record. Our producer, Sean, saw it…
I think Brian Byrne is a real piece of work. I don’t know him personally in the slightest, but just from everything I’ve seen from him he seems like nothing but a real futilitarian douchebag; which is real bittersweet for me since EOTC means worlds to me. But you know what, it’s not like he, nor any other cynical unpleasant human being, doesn’t have a heart. I’m a firm believer in every person having some sort of intellectual human merit, and to disclude even one is hypocritical, because how can we decide what is inhumane if it is being demonstrated by a person at all. That is self-contradictory. This passage on tumblr he posted just made me fully come to demonstrate this process on everyone. Who knows what really happened with EOTC’s breakup? Regardless, they are all people with genuine emotions that conflict. What can you do in such intense conflict other than fight? Just because they couldn’t find some way to cope with each other’s interests, doesn’t mean it’s not possible. It always is. I genuinely believe that even the nastiest of people are redeemable, and hopefully that even deep in their heart, even though they themselves may be convinced & even psychologically get off on the fact that they are scum/the loathed underbelly of society, that they feel & process emotion just like the very people they deem incompetent or ignorant. I wish people wouldn’t cast judgement as strongly as has become habitual. I also wish people wouldn’t write ranty blogs about irrelevant sociological “problems.” But ain’t that the beauty of it? Nothing in life is certain, especially what you may think is. Logic is not, and neither is instinct. It’s some bizarre blend that is unattainable to the human mind. I believe that letting go of the necessity to be correct or in control is a more peaceful and coherently ‘logical’ way of living.
Why the fuck did Brian Byrne’s tumblr post inspire me to go on an introspective rant? I don’t know. I’ve been thinking alot. Or maybe it’s all the ‘ice cream’…
Either way “Company of Men” is a great ‘song’ and I really think he’s a great writer, even though I resent his external nastiness. Being a huge influence to me it brings me comfort to see him put out great work, and though resentful, I’m still rooting for him. The alternate verse lyrics he posted really struck a chord in me. Not many works have done so as of late. It’s very refreshing, and I hope the new EP my band is recording come August will accomplish similar with a variety of people. I’m very confident that it can. I have never been more emotionally & artistically invested in the writings of songs before, through 20+ legitimate (ish) songs I have been a part of writing. Partially in fact, due to it being a concept EP in which I can strongly relate to thematically at this point in my life. I can especially say so for the magnus opus of the album, the closing track. I firmly believe that song will resonate strongly through listeners… but only time will tell.
Haven’t posted on here in a while & have been relatively quiet in general, so I just needed a good ol’ fashioned internet rant. I’m good now.
